It is with great sadness that
we acknowledge the death of Professor Chris
Curtis on May 14, 2008 of the London School of
Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Prof. Curtis was
a medical entomologist and a great malaria
scientist whose field and laboratory research
advanced malaria control greatly. Prof. Curtis
was a kind and gentle man whose quiet manner
concealed a razor sharp mind. Through his
numerous peer reviewed publications and many
presentations he improved the science of malaria
control, thereby saving countless numbers of
lives. Prof. Curtis should be recognized as the
public health hero he was. AFM first worked with
Prof. Curtis in 2000 during the negotiations of
the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic
Pollutants. His robust and compelling defense of
DDT at this time helped to secure its exemption
for use in public health where it continues to
save lives every day. Prof. Curtis will be
missed, but he leaves an impressive legacy that
will live on. Our condolences to his colleagues
and family.
